University of Mary Program in Physical Therapy Share and Learn in Service-Oriented Leadership Experience (SOLE) – Guatemala
The University of Mary strives to graduate students who are competent in their profession; reflect the values of its founders and sponsors, the Sisters of Annunciation Monastery; and act as leaders by providing service to others.
Since 2002, students in their final year of U-Mary's Physical Therapy (PT) Program, which now culminates in a doctorate, have engaged in an annual service-learning experience to Guatemala in conjunction with the GOD’s CHILD Project. (Students who choose not to participate in the international experience instead collaborate with regional service partners such as homeless shelters or reservations.)
While in Guatemala, students perform PT services in facilities such as nursing homes, pediatric centers, hospitals, AIDS hospices, malnutrition centers, and orphanages. In addition, students build houses in order to provide safe shelter for impoverished Guatemalan families.
From Oct. 29 to Nov. 9, 2007, 13 PT students, accompanied by Mary Dockter, PT, Ph.D., will travel to Guatemala. Please return here and read about their experiences and follow their journey. |
