Course Descriptions

A total of 72 credits (42 credits in upper division courses) is required.

In addition to the major requirements of ENG 103, COM 109, MAT 180, CIS 101 and one ethics course, required professional courses include:

ACC 101, BUS 204, BUS 215, BUS 311, BUS 333, BUS 371, COM 204, COM 206, COM 326, COM 329, COM 413, COM 414, PED 121, PED 157, PED 159, PED 313, PED 321, and PED 401. Students will also take sports & leisure courses as follows:

SLM 202 Introduction to Sports & Leisure Management
 
This course is an introduction to sports and leisure management fundamentals, emphasizing the role and relevance of each on society. Students study terminology, philosophies and evolution of sports and leisure, internal and external recreation motivational factors, leisure concepts and relevant contemporary issues.

SLM 227 Program and Event Design and Management

Students will study the principles of organization, planning and group dynamics as they apply to leisure events. Students will learn to identify, develop and apply component skills, such as needs assessment, inventory and evaluation. Students will also plan and administer an actual event. Field experience is required.

SLM 333 Practicum in Sports & Leisure Management

This course provides a unique opportunity for students who are in the decision-making phase of their studies to test a career choice through a practicum experience prior to completing their professional courses. Students will have a supervised part-time field experience at an approved site for the purpose of clarifying career goals. Requires a minimum of 80 clock hours. Satisfactory/no credit grading only.

SLM 327 Facilities Design and Management

This course emphasizes the economic impact of sports facilities, emerging trends in design and construction and the role of the sports manager in optimizing facilities for programming, planning safety, standards and design for both indoor and outdoor facilities.

SLM 411 Legal Aspects of Sports & Leisure Management

This course will allow students to examine pertinent legal issues such as contracts, personal and product liability, risk management, gender discrimination, human resources and drug testing and other component legal issues.

SLM 440, 441 or 442 Internship

Students will have the option of choosing a university internship, which will provide students with the opportunity to gain an on-campus experience in a recreational program with emphasis on organization, leadership and supervision of recreation activities under the guidance of a university professional, or a professional internship, which is designed to provide sports management track majors with a pre-professional experience under the direct and individualized guidance and supervision of a sports management specialist outside of the university setting. Internship sites will vary, or a university internship in health fitness, which provides students an opportunity to gain an on-campus experience in a recreational program with an emphasis on organization, leadership and supervision of health fitness activities under the guidance of a university professional.
