EDU 201 Introduction to Teaching
This course introduces students to the issues, trends, and opportunities experienced by members of the teaching profession. Students become familiar with the University of Mary's program of teacher preparation and the conceptual framework of the Division of Education as they develop their philosophy of education. During this course students will make application to the Division of Education.

EDU 202 Introduction to Teaching for Transfer Students
Assuming that the student has had some exposure to the field of education, this course introduces the transfer student to the University of Mary's program of teacher preparation and the conceptual framework of the Division of Education as students develop their philosophy of education. During this course students will make application to the Division of Education.

EDU 295 Learners with Exceptional Needs
Teachers must teach students with a wide variety of educational needs. This course presents an overview of learners with exceptional needs. Emphasis will be on processes and principles of special education, overviews of exceptionalities, curriculum, and inclusion.

EDU 301 Classroom Management
Teachers deal with complex interactions among diverse individuals. This course is designed to present proactive methods of classroom/behavior management. Emphasis is upon recognizing and empowering desired behavior and dealing effectively with undesirable behavior. Prospective elementary teachers should take classroom management concurrently with Block I methods courses: EDU 300, 311, 312, 315; and PED 305.

PED 303 Secondary Methods - Physical Education
This course is designed to familiarize students with managerial, instructional, and institutional responsibilities of a middle school and/or secondary physical education teacher. This course is delivered by licensed teachers in middle schools and/or high schools in the Bismarck area. Concurrent registration with EDU 310 is required. Prerequisites: EDU 301, 320, and 391.

EDU 310 Secondary Education Practicum
The purpose of this course is to provide the student with an opportunity to observe teaching and learning activities in a middle school and/or secondary high school classroom.

EDU 320 Curriculum, Instruction and Assessment
This course focuses on the curriculum development process in K-12 schools; the techniques used in designing and delivering learning activities; and the formal and informal assessment methods used to assess the performance of all students. Emphasis will be placed on the interdependence of curriculum, instruction, and assessment.

EDU 365 Reading Instruction in the Content Area
This course emphasizes the importance of content literacy in middle school and secondary grades. It gives an overview of instructional techniques, materials, and best teaching practices in reading.

This course is designed to familiarize students with managerial, instructional, and institutional responsibilities of a middle school and/or secondary English teacher. This course is delivered by licensed teachers in middle schools and/or high schools in the Bismarck area.  Concurrent registration with EDU 310 is required. Prerequisites: EDU 301, 320, and 391.

This course is designed to familiarize students with managerial, instructional, and institutional responsibilities of a middle school and/or secondary social studies teacher. The course is also designed to familiarize students with managerial, instructional, and institutional responsibilities of the professional teacher. This course is delivered by licensed teachers in middle schools and/or high schools in the Bismarck area. Concurrent registration with EDU 310 is required. Prerequisites: EDU 301, 320, and 391.

EDU 377 Secondary Methods - Mathematics
This course is designed to familiarize students with managerial, instructional, and institutional responsibilities of a middle school and/or secondary math teacher. The course is also designed to familiarize students with managerial, instructional, and institutional responsibilities of the professional teacher. This course is delivered by licensed teachers in middle schools and/or high schools in the Bismarck area.  Concurrent registration with EDU 310 is required. Prerequisites: EDU 301, 320, and 391.

This course is designed to familiarize students with managerial, instructional, and institutional responsibilities of a middle school and/or secondary biology teacher. The course is also designed to familiarize students with managerial, instructional, and institutional responsibilities of the professional teacher. This course is delivered by licensed teachers in middle schools and/or high schools in the Bismarck area.  Concurrent registration with EDU 310 is required. Prerequisites: EDU 301, 320, and 391.

EDU 391 Strategies for Diverse Learners
Education students must be knowledgeable regarding diverse learning styles. This course is designed to examine students' personal approaches to learning and utilizing this self-knowledge in developing a wide variety of teaching strategies to meet the needs of a global population.

EDU 411 Student Teaching Assessment
Student teachers must have obtained a satisfactory level of proficiency in a number of teaching skill areas prior to their student teaching placement. This course is designed to provide students with feedback on the University of Mary Division of Education professional competencies. This assessment provides insight into professional readiness of each student teacher. An audit of graduation requirements is also conducted so that the student will be aware of any deficiencies in program requirements prior to student teaching (Prerequisite to student teaching)

EDU 421 Instructional Strategies in the Technological Classroom
This course is designed to increase the teaching effectiveness of preservice teachers who are preparing to become licensed teachers by improving their teaching skills in the areas in which research has demonstrated will increase student learning. This course must be taken concurrently with EDU 310 and the student's content specific secondary methods course: EDU 371, 373, 377, or 379.

EDU 422 Foundations, Issues, and Trends
Teachers must have knowledge about the historical and philosophical foundations of education and the current issues and trends influencing education. This course is designed to assist these students in realistically appraising the factors impinging upon the social, psychological, historical, and philosophical bases in American education. Students study current issues and trends in education and the political and social conflicts that affect the teaching profession and progress in American education. In addition, students are required to develop a personal philosophy of education and learn how an effective school philosophy can help schools set realistic and desirable educational goals.

SPE 319 Secondary Speech Methods
This course examines methods, materials, opportunities, and problems typically encountered in teaching high school speech. Emphasis is on instruction and practice in procedures for planning, instruction and evaluation.
