The curriculum in secondary education is designed to prepare students to be effective secondary classroom teachers, capable of meeting the needs of all students including those with special needs and from varied backgrounds. Students can obtain a secondary teaching degree in each of the following secondary content areas: English, math, biology, music, social studies, and history.
A student completing the secondary education program at the University of Mary is eligible for licensure to teach in grades 7-12 in North Dakota. For those students who want to teach at the middle school level, it is advised to complete the course requirements for a Middle School Endorsement. Meeting the requirement for licensure in other states is the responsibility of the student.
Major in Secondary Education: ENG 103; COM 109; PSY 201, 207 or 332; SOC 102 or 202 or 304; Lab Science Course; MAT 103 or above; EDU 201 or 202, 295, 310, 320, 365, 391, 421, 422; Secondary Methods Course (content area); and Student Teaching Course (content area); and ALU 499.
Division of Education Admission Requirements
The specific requirements for entrance into the Division of Education are as follows:
1. A student must have minimum overall GPA of 2.5.
2. A student must complete a Personal Data Form.
3. A student must submit a current Graduation Report.
4. A student must write and submit an essay on the "Philosophy of the Division of Education."
5. For SBS teaching, English teaching, biology teaching, math teaching, and music majors only: Students must provide written evidence of acceptance by their major division.
Admission to the Division of Education is prerequisite to taking EDU and PED 300-400 level courses. Admission requirements are presented and discussed in EDU 201-Introduction to Teaching, and all 200-level courses must be completed prior to enrollment in EDU/PED 300-400-level courses. |
