Music Degree and Participation Options
The University of Mary Music Department offers a range of study, including majors and minors in music, ensemble participation, and applied (private) lessons. The following is a brief description of the different kinds of programs available to students.
Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) – Music Performance
The Bachelor of Arts degree prepares students for a career as a performer of vocal or instrumental music, private studio music teacher, or church music director. Many students in this degree elect a double-major in music education or an outside field. Click here for course requirements.
Bachelor of Science (B.S.) – Music Education
The Bachelor of Science degree with a major in music education prepares students for certification to teach music in the public schools. Students select an emphasis in K-12 vocal music (choral and general music), K-12 instrumental music (instrumental and general music), or K-12 vocal/instrumental music (choral, instrumental and general music). Click here for course requirements.
Minor in Music
The minor in music is designed for students who wish to pursue performance and academic study of music at the collegiate level, but whose career plans are in an outside field. Students are prepared for a lifelong enjoyment of music, and for participation in community ensembles, church worship, and private studio teaching. Click here for course requirements.
Ensemble Participation
Students from any major are welcome to participate in the wide variety of ensembles offered by the U-Mary Music Department. The large choral and instrumental ensembles – Concert Choir, Concert Band and Pep Band – welcome anyone with prior experience, and students audition only for placement. Small ensemble participation (jazz ensemble, chamber choir, vocal jazz, woodwind/brass/percussion chamber music) is by competitive audition and/or instructor permission, and concurrent large ensemble participation may be required.
Applied Music Lessons
Private study in voice, piano, band instruments, guitar, and bass is offered to all students. Priority is given to music majors and minors, and lessons are available to non-majors on a space-available basis. Any student who enrolls in applied music study must contact the Music Department each semester during registration/verification.
