Preparing Leaders
    for a Technological Age ...

The University of Mary Department of Mathematics

  • Assists students in thinking effectively, empirically, independently, and constructively.
  • Emphasizes lifelong learning, learning how to learn.
  • Presents servant leadership skills and practices in a Benedictine environment emphasizing hospitality, moderation, and prayer.
  • Gives students real experiences in practicing their newly acquired skills.
  • Provides the courses and skills necessary for teaching certification.
  • Assists students in gaining admission to graduate programs.

Every student who has applied for teaching certification has found a teaching position or has gone on to graduate study.

Some notable students include Rachel (Hatzenbuhler) Welder, who is completing her doctorate in mathematics education, and Jerome Trouba, who is beginning a doctoral program in mathematics. Both of these students are attending Montana State University.

Mission

We promote academic excellence in a Benedictine environment by offering thorough, relevant courses and programs that prepare students to function as leaders in their communities and as professionals in their chosen careers. We provide service to all University of Mary students requiring mathematics for general education or for their major, and we provide a program for students who will teach mathematics or work in careers using mathematical skills.

Philosophy

We view ourselves as part of a learning community that functions in accordance with the Benedictine values accepted by this university. We strive for active student learning involving faculty-student interaction in our courses, internships, and practica. Our curriculum is a dynamic enterprise that is regularly reviewed and revised, based on faculty, student, and outside professional assessments. We believe that students can exhibit excellence as professionals and at the same time display Benedictine values as servant-leaders.

Outcomes

Graduates of the University of Mary Mathematics Department will:

  • Be able to teach mathematics at the middle school or high school level, or find employment in business, engineering, or other careers.
  • Be qualified to enter graduate school.
  • Carry out professional and civic activities in ways consistent with the Benedictine values professed by the University of Mary.
