On September 14, 2006, in recognition of more than four decades of friendship and visionary leadership from Richard Tschider, the University of Mary, America's Leadership University, dedicated the Richard A. Tschider Center for Health Science, an expansion of the McDowell Activity Center, to Richard and Sharon Tschider and their children. Tschider, a member of the university's board of trustees, retired in 2006 after 45 years at St. Alexius Medical Center, first as personnel director and then as CEO for the past 29 years. In his service at St. Alexius, Richard Tschider collaborated with the Benedictine Sisters of Annunciation Monastery in promoting quality and connectedness between the University of Mary and St. Alexius Medical Center. It is a collaboration in which hospital-based and university health professionals work together in providing students excellent educational opportunities and strategize for community-based, primary and preventive health care.
The Richard A. Tschider Center for Health Science (RTC) on the campus of the University of Mary services both the athletic department and the Division of Human Performance Sciences. Completed in August 2006, the Tschider Center provides 13,400 square feet of new space and 5,000 square feet of renovated space. It provides a setting for athletic training students’ clinical experience and is utilized as an academic setting for the instruction of courses within the U-Mary Athletic Training Education Program (ATEP) curriculum. The newly constructed space includes three large rooms for classes or labs, two testing/clinic rooms, and a 4,000-square-foot weight room.
The Athletic Training Facility is located in the lower (ground) level of the Tschider Center –- Rooms 108-110. RTC 109 –- the athletic training room -– contains private treatment booths, plinths, rehabilitative therapy areas and modalities and is used for the evaluation, treatment, and rehabilitation of injuries sustained to Marauders student-athletes that occur during intercollegiate practices and competition. BOC-certified athletic trainers and athletic training students staff the athletic training facility. All modalities, i.e., whirlpools, ultrasound, electrical muscle stimulation, and moist heat are used for injuries that have been evaluated and are being treated for by the athletic training staff. A large classroom -- RTC 110 -- contains eight treatment plinths and enough stools to be used as both a classroom and laboratory by the ATEP. RTC 110 houses a variety of anatomical models and charts, joint specimen models, and a selection of simulation and muscular anatomy and kinesiology software, as well as a small library of textbooks that are used to facilitate greater understanding of key concepts. Two large windows located in the wall between RTC 109 and 110 allow the certified athletic training staff to keep the athletic training students in direct line of sight.
Athletic training students have access to these facilities and to the classrooms. Most athletic training course work is taught in this area, and laboratory sessions are held in the athletic training room or in the classrooms. When not used for class or lab, RTC 110 is used for overflow during busy athletic training room hours and also as a private area for athletic training educational competency testing. Also used as the taping area, this room contains five taping stations.
The office for the athletic training secretary -– RTC 108 -– is directly connected to the athletic training room. Private office space for the full-time certified athletic training staff is located directly across the hallway from the athletic training facility. The athletic training staff works under the direction of medical director Dr. Raymond Gruby and team physicians Dr. Joseph Carlson, Dr. Robert Rosswick, and Dr. Steven Scherr, along with Student Health Clinic nurse practitioner, Laura Fuerstenberg.
The McDowell Activity Center is the home of the University of Mary Marauders. Connected to the Richard A. Tschider Center for Health Science, the Leach Center for Student Life and Leach Field House, the McDowell Activity Center is the home court for the University of Mary basketball, wrestling, and volleyball teams. The facility seats approximately 2,000 people and also holds locker rooms, offices, and an Olympic-size swimming pool, which offers the athletic trainer the opportunity to employ aquatic therapy in the rehabilitation of athletic injuries.
The University of Mary Student Life Center, is like no other in the state and offers state-of-the-art equipment for training, prevention, and rehabilitation of athletic injuries. Located at the heart of the University of Mary campus, the centerpiece of the field house is the 160-meter indoor track surrounding three interchangeable courts for activities such as basketball, volleyball and tennis. Other features of the Leach Center for Student Life and the Leach Field House include: a climbing wall, racquetball court, 3,000-sq. ft. fitness center with cardiovascular and Cybex weight equipment, and a professionally staffed PrimeCare Clinic.
The St. Alexius Human Performance Center, AIM Physical Therapy, and Medcenter One Bone, Spine and Sport are currently utilized for the practicum experience, but will also be used as an adjunct laboratory facility. Students have the opportunity to practice with equipment utilized in the sports medicine setting that is not available on campus.
