My philosophy for nursing education is to guide prospective nurses in learning the art and science of nursing while presenting them with teaching strategies to empower them to become strategic learners. The work of St. Thomas Aquinas is the basis of my educational beliefs. His work maintains that learning takes place when one teaches another, "and the teacher conveys the knowledge to the pupil's mind causing him to know what he previously had the capacity to know before (Specimen pages from the Summa Theologica of St. Thomas). Each and every student whom I encounter has a story of how he or she was drawn to the nursing profession. As an educator, it is my responsibility to hear these stories and help students to grow and develop into professionals.
On Servant-Leadership . . .
"The greatest good you can do for another is not just share your riches, but reveal to them their own." This quote from Benjamin Disraeli represents the mission of the University of Mary. By living the Benedictine values of respect for all persons, community, hospitality, mindfulness, stewardship, care of the sick, and moderation, one develops the skills of a servant-leader. A servant-leader is one who can see the good in others, but also helps others to develop their own self-worth. It is my responsibility as both a servant-leader and educator to fulfill this mission.
