I started at the University of Mary in the fall of 2007. As an advocate for jazz and music education, I have given private lessons, taught instrumental methods, directed university and public school ensembles, and been active in many different styles of solo and ensemble performance.
I have worked as a trombonist throughout the Southeast and the Michigan/Chicago and Washington D.C. areas. I was a 1999 Downbeat Award winner and a two-year participant in the Betty Carter Jazz Ahead program at the Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C. My writings on jazz trombone techniques were published in the April 2002 issue of The Instrumentalist magazine.
Community and Professional Interests
Statement on Servant Leadership . . . David firmly believes in each student's right to grow at his or her own pace in an open and nurturing teaching environment and the responsibility of teachers to revise their teaching strategies as a student's needs change. As musicians, we have an opportunity and an obligation to share our gifts through a dedication to community and service. By serving our community, we may discover truths within ourselves.
