I started my teaching career in the Division of Education as a part-time faculty member in special education. I joined the division as an assistant professor in 1994. I have taught a variety of courses in both the undergraduate and graduate areas, specializing in courses that deal with inclusion of diverse students. I recently completed my doctorate in educational leadership at the University of St. Thomas, and my dissertation research focused upon the needs of people with disabilities who live within our local community. I direct the graduate programs in education and coordinate programs in special education.

On Teaching . . .
For the past 10 years or so, my education mission statement (especially as regards student with diverse abilities) has been “Find the need; meet the need.” Although I ground pre-service teachers with sound research-based knowledge, skills, and dispositions, I believe the best teachers are those who use both head and heart to discover each child’s needs and to partner with the child in meeting those needs.
