 Athletic Director Al Bortke
For 30 years, Al Bortke has dedicated his time and energy to the development of quality programs at the University of Mary.
Bortke came to the University of Mary in 1973 after 13 years of coaching high school basketball during which he compiled a 174-81 record.
In his first 16 years at U-Mary, Bortke was the Marauder head basketball coach. His 335-156 coaching record places him second in wins among all coaches in North Dakota's college and university basketball history. In 1989, Bortke became the University's first full-time athletic director (AD).
Bortke is a member of the Marauder Hall of Fame and the United States Leadership Council of Special Olympics. Bortke chairs the DAC-10 athletic directors; serves as the NAIA Region 3 chair; is a member of the NAIA Council of Athletic Administrators; and was named the 2000 North Dakota Collegiate Athletic Conference, Region III AD of the Year, NAIA AD of the Year, and NACADA Central Region AD of the Year.
Bortke believes that collegiate athletic programs provide more than just an opportunity to play a sport. An athletic program is an extension of what is taught in the classroom-how to succeed in life, says Bortke.
