Basketball was the first sport to be introduced at the University of Mary. Starting in 1970, the Marauders were led by Fritz Fell, who coached the Marauders until 1973.
In 1973 Al Bortke, a successful high school coach, was brought in and led the Marauders for the next 16 years, establishing a 335-156 record. During Bortke's tenure, the Marauders joined the North Dakota College Athletic Conference (NDCAC) in 1987. Coach Bortke became the university's first full-time athletic director in 1989 and has helped the Marauder athletic program grow to encompass its current 19 varsity sports.
Rod Jonas was named head coach in 1989. Coach Jonas guided the Marauders for the next six seasons and captured a NDCAC title in 1991 and 1992. Coach Jonas stepped aside in 1995 to work full time in the university's education department. Dr. Jonas was named chair of the Education Division in 2004.
The Marauders named Jim Feeney their new head coach in 1995. Coach Feeney led the Marauders for the next nine seasons, including six straight winning seasons from 1998-2004, compiling a 145-113 record and leading the transition as the University of Mary joined the Dakota Athletic Conference in 2000.
Juno Pintar was named head coach in 2004-05 and has led the Marauders to a 40-48 record over the past three seasons as the Marauders made the jump to NCAA Division II and the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference.
