Growth Through Change & Commitment Campaign

A Blueprint for Progress

After 42 years of successfully serving a growing student population, the University is prepared to accept the challenge of achieving national recognition as America's Leadership University. Recognizing the need to keep pace with rapidly advancing technologies and changing global conditions, the University is making a new commitment to leadership development with continuing emphasis on mission and academic quality. The University has conducted a rigorous and comprehensive planning process involving students, faculty, and staff, alumni and friends. The resulting plan, "Growth Through Change and Commitment" establishes the University's goals for the next five years.

Goal One: Increase enrollment by 50 percent

A major focus of the plan is to develop the faculty and staff, the facilities, the technology, and the resources necessary to offer a leadership experience to all students. In the Christian, Catholic, and Benedictine tradition, the University of Mary looks to serving 3,000 full-time students, including 500 full-time adult learners in programs at the Fargo campus.

Goal Two: Strengthen the quality of the University

The implementation of the plan is to continue the emergence of the University of Mary as the leading private college or university in the western plains states of North Dakota, South Dakota, Montana and Wyoming, with the goal of achieving national significance for quality academic programs and a unique leadership experience.

Goal Three: Continue to provide access to students from all economic backgrounds

It is a commitment of the University to provide "affordable excellence" for all students by (a) maintaining a tuition that is 40 percent below the national private college or university average, and (b) offering adequate scholarship assistance.

Goal Four: Allocate resources effectively and efficiently

Consistent with the University's tradition of fiscal responsibility it will continue the policy that annual budgets must be balanced, and that all non-revenue producing facilities must be constructed without long-term debt.

Goal Five: Provide all students with the unparalleled opportunity to participate in an innovative, values-based leadership program based on the "Servant Leader" model, consisting of three distinct experiences:

The Benedictine Experience

The Competence Experience

The Servant Leader Experience

To foster in each student those values required for ethical decision making.    To assure future employers that every graduate has achieved a level of competence in eight critical areas.    To develop and implement in cooperation with the region's top leaders and executives a unique leadership experience for all students.
  • A spirit of hospitality
  • A habit of service
  • Respect for others
  • A strong work ethic balanced with Christian values that encourage faithfulness to community and a life of prayer

  • Communicating
  • Effective thinking
  • Valuing
  • Information literacy
  • Aesthetics
  • Social environment
  • Physical environment
  • Professional development

  • First-Year Experience
  • Character Building Experience
  • Hands-On Experience
  • Career Development Experience
  • Service Learning Experience

Goal Six: Expand the efforts of the Harold Schafer Leadership Center

To build on the success of the Harold Schafer Leadership Center, services will expand to include:

  • Mentorship teams in Bismarck and Fargo
  • A statewide "Schafer Center Network"
  • Expanded training opportunities for corporations and organizations

Goal Seven: Continue to strengthen and broaden the Emerging Leaders Academy

The University places the highest emphasis on developing the Emerging Leaders Academy into one of the nation's premiere leadership programs for the best and the brightest students in the upper Midwest. To broaden student opportunities, the Academy will be expanded to include all majors offered at the University of Mary.
