Marauders Unable to Duplicate Opening Day Success on Day Two of NCAA Track and Field Championships

May 23, 2008

Walnut, CA – Day two at the 2008 NCAA Division II Outdoor Track and Field Championships wasn’t quite as successful as the opening day for the University of Mary. After qualifying for Saturday’s finals in two events on the first day, the Marauders were unable to duplicate that success on the second day of the three-day event.

Jesse Piper fell just shy of advancing to the championship finals in the men’s 110 meter hurdles. Piper cleared the barriers in a time of 14.49 to place tenth overall. Unfortunately, only nine hurdlers advance to the finals. Holding the 13th best time in the nation entering the championships, Piper improved his standing three spots.

Kacie Sweep, a day after leading the U-Mary women’s 4x100 meter relay team to the finals, ran the 200 meter dash in a time of 25.02. She finished fifth in her heat and 18th overall and will not advance to the finals of the event.

After earning All-America status in the triple jump in the national indoor meet, Destinee Keller was unable to duplicate the feat in the outdoor championships. Keller had efforts of 11.55 meters and 11.63 meters before fouling on her final attempt. She placed 16th overall.

In the men’s shot put, Josh Obrigewitch’s best effort of 15.16 meters (49 feet 9 inches) wasn’t enough to advance him to the finals. Obrigewitch finished 16th in the event.

The U-Mary women’s team will have two opportunities in the finals on Saturday to earn All-America honors and points in the team race. The U-Mary 4x100 meter relay team of Sweep, Kristen Stewart, Mishay Weber and Cassie Blazer sprinted to a 46.95 clocking on opening day, tying the quartet’s best time of the season. They grabbed the ninth and final spot in the finals set for Saturday, May 24, at 8:27 p.m. pacific time.

Blazer posted the sixth-best 400 meter hurdle qualifying mark in the preliminaries, recording a time of 1:01.28. For the sophomore from Mandan, ND, it was her best time of the year by .08. Blazer will now compete in the finals on Saturday at 7:15 p.m.
