Bismarck, ND – The University of Mary women’s and men’s outdoor track and field continue to make a smooth transition into the world of NCAA Division II competition. Following strong performances at the Northern Sun conference meet, the Marauders continue to earn national recognition. In the final 2008 United State Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association rankings, the women’s squad ranks 13th while the men’s team is 24th.
The U-Mary women’s team is ranked first among Northern Sun teams and fifth in the North Central region. The Marauders won the Northern Sun outdoor championship earlier this spring. In two years competing in the NSIC, U-Mary won title both years. The Marauders now have won 13 conference titles in 14 years.
The top-ranked men’s outdoor track and field team among Northern Sun squads, the Marauders are rated sixth among North Central competition. U-Mary was the runner-up at the NSIC meet, just 7.5 points out of first.
Seven Marauders advanced to the 2008 NCAA Division II Outdoor Track and Field Championships on May 22-24 and will compete in seven events. Kacie Sweep will run in the 200 meter dash and the 4x100 meter relay. Cassie Blazer is racing in the 400 meter hurdles and the 4x100 meter relay. Destinee Keller hopes to claim her second All-American title in the triple jump. Mishay Weber and Kristen Stewart join Sweep and Blazer on the 4x100. For the men, Jesse Piper competes in the 110 meter hurdles and the 400 meter hurdles and Josh Obrigewitch will throw the shot put.
