As interest in U-Mary’s human performance science programs continues to grow, the university is anticipating a new health and fitness center to accommodate the needs of its students.
Plans for the Richard A. Tschider Center for Health Science involve the addition of a story to the east wing of the McDowell Activity Center and renovations to existing space. The health science center will provide 13,400 square feet of new space and 5,000 square feet of renovated space. The newly constructed space will include three large rooms for classes or labs, two testing/clinic rooms, and a 4,000-square-foot weight room.
“The need for space for the university’s growing, quality health care programs is becoming increasingly evident,” says University of Mary President Sister Thomas Welder. “A health and fitness center will address the lack of space for labs, the accreditation requirements in the athletic training area, and the need to expand and upgrade the weight room.”
According to U-Mary Executive Vice President Jerry Fischer, adding on to an existing facility is more cost-efficient and allows for winter construction by eliminating the need for underground work. The facility is scheduled to be ready for use by August 2006.
