How can Parents Help their Son or Daughter Make the Transition to College

As parents your awareness and involvement in the university chosen by your son or daughter is an important first step in creating the best conditions for success. Your knowledge of the campus environment can be instrumental in directing and/or encouraging your son or daughter to become involved in student organizations, activities and clubs. More importantly, if your son or daughter has concerns, your encouragement to seek assistance early will be very helpful

Typically, first year students may experience some difficulty in making the transition from high school to college. Most colleges and the University of Mary have several types of programs that help first year students and upper class students resolve personal and academic issues that may arise.

If you know that your son or daughter is eligible to participate in the Student Support Services (SSS) Program, please encourage he or she to at least become aware of the various services and benefits that are available to participating students. For over thirty years the SSS Program has helped thousands of University of Mary students accomplish their goal of completing a college education. The SSS program can help eligible students with every phase of their college experience.
