1. What is Student Support Services (SSS)?

SSS is a federal grant program sponsored by the U.S. Department of Education and designed to provide academic and personal assistance to students who are low-income and first-generation and have academic need as determined by the institution. Students with disabilities can also receive services, provided they have academic need as determined by the institution. The goal of the SSS program is to increase the college graduation rate among low-income and first-generation students.

2.
What services can an eligible student receive?

The SSS program provides academic advising; personal advising and referral; financial aid advising and referral; career advising and referral; instruction in language arts; developmental instruction in reading, writing, and mathematics; peer tutorial assistance; professional tutorial assistance; supplemental grant aid for first- and second-year students who are Pell grant recipients; graduate school awareness; and sneak preview courses for incoming freshmen. Interested students must complete an application to determine their eligibility to receive services. Applications are available in room 121, lower west wing of the Benedictine Center.

3. Can only low-income and first-generation students, and students with disabilities receive services?

Only low-income and first-generation students and students with disabilities can receive services from the SSS program. The University of Mary does however pay the peer tutorial costs for students who are not eligible for the SSS program. To view institutional services available to the general student population see the Student Services link.

4. How do I apply for a tutor?

A student interested in receiving tutorial assistance must apply for these services. The tutorial assistance office is located in room 120 in the lower west wing of the Benedictine Center. Vicki Riske is the tutor coordinator.

5. In what courses can I receive tutorial assistance?

The tutorial assistance program provides assistance in most 100- and 200-level math and science courses and Chemistry 318 and Physics 304. Tutorial assistance is also available in General Sociology 107; Psychology 201 and 207; Philosophy 202; Accounting 101, 102, 202 and 204; Computers 107, 203 and 204; and Business 203 and 204.

A student may participate in the Student Support Services program until he or she completes his or her bachelor’s degree and provided he or she has academic need to participate.
