About Me
I am a performer and a teacher. I try hard to maintain a healthy balance between those two roles because I believe that excellence in one truly can inform and enhance the other. As a string player, I get excited about beautiful performance spaces like Mary's Chapels and Heskett Hall. I collaborate with students in applied lessons, studio classes, and string methods classes. A significant part of my collaboration with colleagues occurs off-campus through my work as concertmaster of the Bismarck-Mandan Symphony Orchestra.
Why I’m At MaryI'm at Mary to help students navigate the complex technical challenges of string playing; to help them develop a collection of repertoire that will serve as a useful toolbox after they graduate; to equip students with ensemble skills so they can participate in chamber and/or orchestral music for years to come; and to help them become their own teacher.
Expertise
I have extensive experience playing music from the Baroque and Classical eras, using period instruments, bows, notation, and pitches. Learning how to play Bach, Handel, and Mozart in a historically informed way changed how I approach all music. I grew up in Japan and attended Japanese schools through high school. I speak, read, and write Japanese at a native level.
